Here’s something you don’t see every day: A basketball-dunking sea otter.
Eddie, a 15-year-old otter who lives in the Oregon Zoo in Portland, was trained by the zoo’s lead sea otter keeper, Jenny DeGroot, to play basketball in order to help alleviate some arthritis that was developing in his elbows. A year later, he looks like a natural.
Sea otters, which were near extinction early in the 20th century, are a protected species in the United States. Today, it is estimated that there are more than 100,000 sea otters worldwide.
