An otter trapping season opened this week in Illinois. It’s the first otter season in the state since 1929.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources released 346 otters in the state in 1994, when the population was estimated at less than 100. DNR wildlife biologist Bob Bluett told the Peoria Journal Star that there are now 15,000 to 20,000 river otters in the state.
There is a five-otter-per-trapper limit this season.
