SECRETARY’S REPORT
Trapping is in full swing now and so is the monsoon season. I heard that it is going to rain if a cow scratches its left ear with its left rear leg. I guess that there are a lot of cows out there just scratching away. I went out the other day in the rain and I think that if I left a canoe on shore I could not have gotten any wetter if I swam around the swamp.
Now, to the good stuff. We had our meeting last Wednesday (Oct. 21) and we were in the giving mood. It was agreed upon that we donate to the following organizations — $200 to the Salvation Army, $1000 to the NTA on behalf of all the donators to our convention, $100 to Northland Sportsmen Club, $75 to the St. James Lutheran Church, $200 to the United Sportsman Alliance for their legal fund, and $1,500 to the MTA legal defense fund. We also decided to donate subscriptions of Fur-Fish-Game to 10 school libraries due to not being able to send them the MUCC magazine since we are not affiliated with them any longer. This will bring the total of subscriptions to 20 different school libraries. Those being the following high schools: Alcona, Alpena, Cheboygan, Gaylord, Petoskey, Kalkaska, Grayling, Harrison, Onaway, Wolverine, Sault Ste. Marie, Les Cheneaux (Cedarville), Brimley, LaSalle (St. Ignace), Pickford, Whitefish (Paradise), Detour, Engadine, Rudyard, Tahquamenon (Newberry).
The Trappers dinner will be on the 20th of February, 2010. The cost could change due to increase of the catering service. The cost to the trapper and one guest will be $9 each. The cost of each additional guest could be either $11 or $12 each. The social hour will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and dinner will be at 7 p.m. Make sure to reserve your place for the dinner and send your check to Mark Spencer before Feb. 10. There will be an update on the price by the next letter. The next meeting will be on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Gaylord at the Northland Sportsman Club.
Now that you’ve caught a ton of fur, what can you do with it? Mark Spencer (906-292-4779) will be picking up fur for Fur Harvesters Auction on Dec. 12 and Jan. 9 and 10 in the Lower Peninsula and Dec. 13 and Jan. 16 and 17 in the U.P. Richard Clark (920-897-3618) will be picking up fur for NAFA on Dec. 12 and 13 and Jan. 23 and 24 in the U.P. I have no information for the NAFA pickup person or dates in the Lower Peninsula. Groenewold (815-938-2381) will be picking up fur on Dec. 16 and 17 in the U.P. and Jan. 1 in the Lower. And, of course, you also have your local auctions and fur buyers.
To those out there that trap gray fox and plan to sell to Groenewold, they want the fox stretched with the fur in. Groenewold has some prerequisites on how they want the fur done up – in the grease or the entire critter in the round. Make sure you call them to clarify this before you take them to the pickup site. It probably is a good idea to call the pickup people before you sell or ship due to there might be some changes.
There have been some changes made in the trapping regulations, so make sure you read your hunters guide book.
Here are a few words from Penny concerning your Trapper & Predator Caller. When your renewal form comes, please send it to Jim as soon as possible. I know they send it a few months early, but by the time I get it, send it to them and they act upon it, it could take two months. The sooner you send it, the more apt you are to not miss an issue. I send the renewals in once a month on the 26th so I need to get it before the 25th if you want it to go in that month. Also I have heard that sometimes members miss an issue or two. If this happens PLEASE CALL ME IMMEDIATELY. I can call them and get it straightened out. Also, when you send in your membership renewal, if you get your newsletter via e-mail, I’ll mail out your card. If you get your newsletter mailed, I’ll put it in the next newsletter.
Hope you have a good trapping season.
— Jim
